The archive contains the records of the Columban Fathers from their foundation right up to published material from the present day. The majority of the records are from 1916-1970. This includes records of the Central Administration, as well as the records of the different Regions and Regional Mission Units in Asia, North and South America and Australasia. Also included in the archive are the papers of significant Columbans including the founders Edward Galvin and John Blowick, and the records of projects associated with the Columbans. The most important of these projects was the Columban Oral History Project.

The records in the archive exist in a variety of formats including: correspondence, accounts, minute books, reports, statistics, diaries, maps, articles, deeds, constitutions, journals, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, and audio-visual material. The archive also contains an extensive film collection which includes early 20th century film from China and other Missions Regions.
